Here's an example...My customer wanted a fairly large group portrait of his three young children, so he sent me several personal photos for me to consider as a reference...and we arranged a phone call to discuss my process and recommendations.
After our strategy phone call we agreed that the boy's expression in one picture was just right, and that the face and smile of the middle child in the other photo was preferred. Additionally, the third child on the right in one of the photos was great, but she was standing away from the other two. So....I integrated those modifications into my preliminary sketch. Lastly, we agreed to use a single color shaded background not in the original photos. After our review and his acceptance I proceeded with the pastel painting and the unframed finished pastel artwork is shown below.
